I have had many conversations (far too many to count) with managers and leaders who are trying to decide if it’s time to let someone go.
The decision to keep investing in someone to try and nurture them, and coach them up to expectations, is often a gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions and energy.
But it doesn’t need to be. I have found there are two questions I can ask any manager to instantly break through the fog and determine if it’s time to let someone go. No matter the story (or the history) with an employee these two questions bring clarity and focus.
Knowing what you know now about their performance, skills, and attitude, would you hire this person again?
If this person quit today would you fight for them to stay or would you be relieved?
Yes, it really is that simple, and answering these questions honestly will tell you everything you need to know about whether or not it’s time to keep trying with an off-track employee or part ways.
The next time you find yourself debating the pros and cons of someone, or agonizing over how to decide what to do, just take a moment to answer these questions honestly—from your gut. Don’t think, just answer.
